You've Helped Pay For: 5 Months Of Jennifer's Bill

Q. Do you have any past experiences that you think may have contributed to your current situation?

I grew up in Montreal, but moved to Vancouver two years ago in search of a new outlook on life. Unfortunately, I came unprepared and was inexperienced in living on my own. I was homeless for eight months and because of the lack of shelters in this city I was often left on the streets night after night. As a young woman in a major urban city, I found it hard to gain a sense of security, especially given my precarious housing conditions. I spent most of my time trying to find employment by using library computers, but my efforts began to feel superfluous after errors in communication caused me to miss multiple job opportunities.

Q. What impact do you think a cellphone could have on your life?

A cellphone would allow me to regularly communicate with my therapist, and with time, would provide me with access to a broader support network. A static phone number would also assist me in finding career opportunities, and having the ability to access the internet would remedy the inconvenience of having to check my emails at the library. I look forward to furthering my education and finding employment as soon as possible. I'm very much into the arts and I'm actually exhibiting some of my works at a Covenant House sponsored showing in the near future. Having a cellphone would only afford me more opportunities to showcase my passion.
