Q. Do you have any past experiences that you think may have contributed to your current situation?

When someone mentions my past experiences, I am often left unsure of where to start. As someone who moved very frequently, inconsistent living situations never let me attain housing stability. My experience living on the reserve was one of many examples. Rampant alcoholism and other issues which plague many reservations in Canada, made for an unsafe and inhospitable environment. In an attempt to leave the reservation, I moved in with a friend. However, her heavy drug habit quickly led me into a downward spiral, resulting in me moving to Covenant House.

Q. What impact do you think a cellphone could have on your life?

My work at a local restaurant often means that I have to be able to work “on-call” or at a short hands notice. Without having a cellphone, I have not been able to develop a proper method of communication with my work. As someone who is devoted to saving, the missed shifts constantly hold me back from the possibility of more income. Outside of work, I also have a dream of pursuing a culinary arts degree, and a cellphone could help me find more opportunities in the field. Lastly, I'm really trying to rekindle and maintain communication with family, who can play a bigger role in my life through more regular communication. In the end, it's just very difficult to maneuver around the city without having a cellphone, especially as a young woman.
